1964 Fender Stratocaster Surf Green
Hold
Nice to have a couple of refinished pre CBS Stratocaster’s with us, still the best buy on the vintage market as the tone can not be matched and with the seemingly ever increasing prices of master built equivalents the cost can easily be at parity. This one is currently in a Foam green livery and its probably seen various other hues over the years. The neck all importantly is still in it original finish including the transitional logo and it feels great to the touch having that worn broken in feel that only time served instruments have. The changes other that the body finish are 2 potentiometers, the surviving one is dated third week of 1964 plus the neck and bridge pickup routs appear to have been deepened slightly for some past pickup experiment. Also its had another set of tuners on the guitar at some point but the good news is no extra visible screw holes and the post holes have not been enlarged ensuring good tuning stability. The original double line Kluson’s are back on the guitar. Its a cool transitional model so green guard with the usual neck screw hole crack plus the tip of the guard has a crack through the screw hole, but it does hold in place the the guard is removed. The fret board and clay dots are in good condition with no excessive wear and the guitar plays well along the neck. The 3 black bottom pickups are still on their original 3 way switch and dated April 64 and along with a neck date of July 64 making for a nice original parts guitar. All the plastic is original as is the tremolo assembly and fittings. Pickups give a resistance reading of Neck: 5.8 k Middle: 5.5k and Bridge 5.5K ohms and sound strong and balanced. It weighs in at 7 lbs 4 oz and the guitar feels lively and resonant and has that “quack and poke” that these later Stratocasters are famous for. It comes in which i thought on first sight was some export case that i have never seen but it is in fact a 1980’s Schecter case which fits the bill perfectly.
