1965 Gretsch 6122 Country Gentleman

Every guitar player on the planet would have dreamt of owning a Gretsch Country Gent after the Beatles exploded onto the world stage in February 1964 on the Ed Sullivan show watched by 73 million people. As a result the Gretsch guitar company were swamped with a million orders over night. Some say quality suffered as a result, and that maybe so but in my experience the higher end models faired better with QC than the lower and the “Gent” was a top of the line instrument along with the Falcon as they shared the same build footprint. The main issue Gretsch suffers with, revealing itself decades later,  along with many other manufacturers of the period, is the longevity of the plastic binding which can literally turn to dust. This guitar i’m happy to say is rot free with just a few minor cracks from age related binding shrinkage, it also is a superb playing guitar on its original frets with a perfect neck angle. The neck “Supertron” pickup is sublime with a smooth silky strong output. The guitar is completely original, the gold plate has dulled with some wear on the face of the Bigsby from the handle rubbing against it whilst storing in the case. The foam mutes have fossilised but could easily be replaced if required as the mute system is fully working. The finish still has its full lustre and just like George’s is a very deep dark mahogany colour which could easily be confused as black in certain lighting situations. The guitar comes with is original case with its key along with its original Gretsch strap. The paperwork is a reprint of the original case candy that would have been supplied with the guitar from new which adds a nice touch to the package.
